Dance

Barefoot Boogie Portsmouth at the Portsmouth Ballroom Dance Studio is a non-profit, freeform dance event for all ages.  We are building a supportive, community based-environment that encourages every body to move in your own unique way. There are no steps to learn; we all teach each other. Ballet New England, founded in 1980, is dedicated to providing the finest in dance education with an emphasis in classical ballet and to develop poise, self-awareness and confidence through technical achievement. Firedance Studios explore the many world traditions where dance is a sacred practice and a celebration. The Studios derive their name from the simple and ancient act of dancing around the fire, both an individual and community event, an act of pure inspiration and improvisation. The Portsmouth School of Ballet was founded in 1993 by the school's Director Kristen Samson.  The faculty are professionally trained degree teachers and offer classes in Classical Ballet, Pointe, Variations, Lyrical, Hip-hop, Jazz, Tap and Modern.   The school has two large studios with marley sprung floors, a large waiting area with a viewing window for parents, air conditioning, and plenty of parking.  It also has two Competition Companies that perform and compete throughout New England.  Portsmouth School of Ballet, 603-436-5993, kristensamson@verizon.net.

Music

Founded in 2002, the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC), offers community members education, performance, exhibition, and outreach opportunities in music and other art forms. With a faculty of 19 professional musicians and educators, PMAC offers private and class instruction in piano, voice, guitar, drums, bass, woodwinds, brass, and many other instruments. PMAC has a variety of music ensembles for beginner through advanced musicians of all ages and has an art gallery devoted to exhibiting the work of local artists. Pottery

The Voice of Clay is an expressive clay company, committed to encouraging conscious living. The nature and energy of clay have inspired the creation of our pots. We offer functional pieces using vibrant glazes evocative of water, air, and a seaside palette. Pottery classes are available to adults and children. Theater

New Hampshire Theatre Project offers theatre classes for all ages September to June at West End Studio Theatre, and summer theatre camps for children and teens at WEST and The Music Hall.  The NHTP Youth Repertory program is designed for students ages 10-17 who have a serious commitment to the theatre arts and are interested in a pre-professional training experience.  Auditions are held in September and participation is from September-May, with mandatory rehearsals, and opportunities to attend master classes with national and international artists.  Spring performances are professionally produced at WEST.  Financial assistance and work scholarships in production and design are available.  For information, contact:  Genevieve Aichele, Artistic Director, New Hampshire Theatre Project. 959 Islington St, PO Box 6507, Portsmouth NH 03802.  (603) 431-6644.

UNH Theatre Resources for You (TRY) is a division of UNH Department of Theatre and Dance.  TRY provides Arts Reach tours, Little Red Wagon tours, theatre summer camp, Drama to promote theatre and enhance education and culture in New England communities.  TRY provides theatre programs to all ages--pre-K to senior adults.  TRY's programs are frequently used by schools, libraries, town halls, recreation centers, churches, hospitals, state parks, festivals, and fairs throughout New England.  TRY's most well-known program is the Little Red Wagon; it is the longest running non-profit theatre tour for children in the United States.  Theatre Resources for You (TRY), Paul Creative Arts Center, 30 College Road, Durham, NH 03824.  603-862-2150. kay.staten@unh.eduhttp://www.unh.edu/theatre-dance/artsreach.html.

Visual Arts

The Coolidge Center for the Arts Studio Art School offers an average of ten classes each autumn and winter.  Media include oil, watercolor, drawing, and mixed media in areas such as landscape, portraiture, the figure, and abstract expressionism.  Faculty include eight distinguished local artists and classes are offered for beginner and intermediate adults and youth.  Scholarship funds are sometimes available. Sanctuary Arts is a traditional skill-based community arts school. The school was established in 1999 by Christopher R.
